Volcanoes National Park

About volcanoes

Volcanoes National Park, or Parc National des Volcans (PNV), is a true jewel in Rwanda’s crown. Located in the northwest of the country, it is a place of immense natural beauty and vital ecological importance. This is the oldest national park in Africa, and it’s most famous for being a sanctuary for the critically endangered mountain gorillas. A visit here is more than just a safari; it’s a profound journey into the world of conservation and a chance to witness one of the planet’s most magnificent creatures in their natural habitat.

The Volcanoes: A Majestic Landscape

The park is part of the larger Virunga Massif, a chain of eight volcanoes that span the borders of Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Five of these volcanoes are located within the park’s boundaries, creating a dramatic landscape of lush montane forests, bamboo groves, and open grasslands. The peaks include:

Mount Karisimbi: The highest of the five, at 4,507 meters. A challenging two-day hike to the summit offers incredible views and even snow at certain times of the year.

Mount Bisoke: A dormant volcano with a beautiful crater lake at its peak. This is one of the most popular and accessible hikes in the park, typically a one-day trek.

Mount Muhabura: Meaning “The Guide,” this volcano stands at 4,127 meters and is known for its stunning crater lake at the top.

Mount Gahinga: The smallest of the five, a rewarding hike for those seeking a less strenuous climb.

Mount Sabyinyo: Meaning “Old Man’s Teeth” due to its jagged summit, this is the point where the borders of Rwanda, Uganda, and the DRC meet.

Volcanoes National Park offers more than gorilla trekking.
