Lake Kivu

About Lake Kivu

Lake Kivu, a vast freshwater lake that forms a natural border between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, is one of Africa’s great lakes and a destination of serene beauty. Unlike the wild landscapes of Rwanda’s national parks, Lake Kivu offers a tranquil and picturesque escape. Its shimmering waters, surrounded by verdant terraced hills and small fishing villages, provide a stunning contrast to the rest of the country. With no dangerous hippos or crocodiles, the lake is safe for swimming and a range of water-based activities, making it a perfect spot for relaxation and active exploration. A visit to Lake Kivu is an ideal way to unwind after a challenging gorilla trek or a wildlife safari.

Towns and Local Life

The shores of Lake Kivu are dotted with charming towns and communities, each with its own distinct character.

Rubavu (Gisenyi): A bustling resort town in the north, popular for its sandy beaches, a lively waterfront promenade, and a relaxed, resort-like atmosphere. It’s a great base for exploring the northern part of the lake and is close to the Congo border.

Karongi (Kibuye): Located in the central part of the lake, Karongi is known for its stunning hills and bays, giving it a fjord-like appearance. It’s quieter and more scenic than Rubavu, making it perfect for a peaceful retreat. It’s also home to the fascinating “Lake Kivu Half-Day Cruise”, which takes you to key islands and points of interest.

Kamembe (Rusizi): Situated at the southern end of the lake, near Nyungwe Forest National Park. It’s a convenient stopover for those traveling between Nyungwe and Lake Kivu, offering beautiful views and a glimpse into a quieter side of Rwandan life.

Key Attractions and Things to Do

Lake Kivu offers both adventure and relaxation. Enjoy boat trips to islands like Napoleon Island, home to fruit bats and panoramic views, or Amahoro Island for swimming and picnics. Adventurers can kayak or canoe the calm waters, discovering hidden coves and local fishermen, while the famous Congo-Nile Trail provides a multi-day cycling or hiking challenge through villages and plantations.

The lake’s fertile shores host thriving coffee plantations, where visitors can learn the bean-to-cup process and taste Rwanda’s finest brews. For ultimate relaxation, sandy beaches in Rubavu (Gisenyi) and Karongi (Kibuye) offer perfect spots for swimming, sunbathing, and soaking in the serene atmosphere.
