About Gorilla Trekking
Gorilla trekking is one of the most iconic and life-changing wildlife experiences in Africa. It allows travelers to step into the dense rainforests of Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in search of the endangered mountain gorillas. These gentle giants share about 98% of their DNA with humans, and meeting them face-to-face in their natural habitat is an encounter filled with wonder, emotion, and lasting memories.
Unlike typical safaris where you view animals from a vehicle, gorilla trekking is a walking expedition that involves hiking through thick forests, navigating rugged terrain, and following expert trackers who locate the gorilla families. Once found, trekkers spend up to one magical hour observing them—watching gorilla mothers care for their young, juveniles play, and silverbacks displaying their immense strength and authority.
What To Experience
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda is the world’s leading gorilla trekking destination, home to nearly half of all remaining mountain gorillas and over 20 habituated families across Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it also offers incredible biodiversity, birdlife, and cultural encounters with the Batwa pygmies.
Nearby, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park provides a quieter experience with the Nyakagezi gorilla family and sweeping views of the Virunga volcanoes. In Rwanda, Volcanoes National Park is renowned for luxury trekking, hosting around 12 families and serving as Dian Fossey’s conservation base. For adventurous travelers, Congo’s Virunga National Park offers raw, less commercial encounters with mountain gorillas and rare lowland gorillas in Kahuzi-Biega.
What to Expect
A gorilla trek begins with a ranger briefing before small groups hike 2–7 hours to find their assigned family. Once located, visitors spend one hour observing gorillas feeding, grooming, and interacting naturally, creating an intimate, awe-inspiring experience with strict no-flash photography rules.
Best Time To Visit
The dry seasons from June to September and December to February are the most popular times for gorilla trekking, offering easier hikes and clear trails. During the rainy months of March to May and October to November, treks are more challenging but reward visitors with lush scenery and fewer crowds.
