Masai Mara National Reserve

About Park

The Masai Mara, a vast and magnificent savanna ecosystem in southwestern Kenya, is a world-renowned safari destination. It is the northern extension of Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park and is most famous for hosting the dramatic climax of the Great Migration every year. The reserve is a place of boundless plains, rolling hills, and a dense concentration of wildlife, offering some of the most spectacular game-viewing opportunities on the continent.

What Activities To Do

The Maasai Mara Reserve offers a variety of unforgettable safari experiences. Game drives are the primary attraction, with well-maintained tracks providing opportunities to see lions, leopards, cheetahs, and other predators in action. From July to October, the Mara River hosts the dramatic Great Migration crossings of wildebeest and zebras.

Hot air balloon safaris at sunrise deliver breathtaking aerial views of the savanna, concluding with a champagne breakfast in the bush. Cultural visits to Maasai villages provide insight into traditional customs and lifestyles. Guided bush walks in designated areas allow travelers to explore the smaller details of the ecosystem, including animal tracking, plants, and other natural wonders.

What To See

The Masai Mara teems with wildlife, offering excellent chances to see the Big Five in a single day. Lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, and rhinos thrive alongside giraffes, zebras, hyenas, wildebeest, hippos, and a rich variety of birds, making it a premier safari destination.

Best Time To Visit

The best time for a safari is during the dry seasons from June to October, particularly to witness the Great Migration. The long rains in April and May make some roads impassable, but they also bring lush scenery and fewer tourists.

How To Get

The most common way is by a scheduled flight from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport (WIL) to one of the Masai Mara’s various airstrips (Mara Serena, Olkiombo, Keekorok, etc.). You can also get there by road, a 5-6 hour drive from Nairobi.

Frequently Asked Questions

Both are incredible. The Masai Mara is smaller and easier to navigate, offering a more concentrated wildlife experience. The Serengeti is vast and offers a sense of endless wilderness. The best choice often depends on the time of year and your travel style.
