Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is one of Uganda’s smallest yet most captivating parks, covering 33.7 square kilometers in the southwestern corner of the country. It forms part of the Virunga Conservation Area alongside Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (Uganda) and the Virunga Volcanoes in Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The park is most famous for mountain gorilla trekking, offering travelers the chance to track habituated gorilla families in their natural habitat. Despite its small size, Mgahinga boasts stunning landscapes, including three extinct volcanoes – Mount Sabinyo, Mount Gahinga, and Mount Muhabura – lush forests, bamboo zones, and crater lakes.
Mgahinga is also home to other primates such as golden monkeys, olive baboons, and black-and-white colobus monkeys. Its birdlife is exceptionally diverse, with over 180 recorded species, including several Albertine Rift endemics. For eco-tourists and adventure travelers, Mgahinga offers a mix of wildlife, scenic trekking, and cultural encounters with the local Batwa pygmy communities.
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park offers diverse adventures, with gorilla trekking as the highlight—an unforgettable journey to meet habituated gorilla families in their natural habitat. Visitors can also enjoy golden monkey tracking, a unique experience found only in the Virunga region. For hiking enthusiasts, the park features three extinct volcanoes: Mount Sabinyo with panoramic tri-border views, Mount Gahinga with scenic bamboo forests, and Mount Muhabura offering sweeping vistas of Rwanda’s volcanic ranges.
Beyond wildlife, the park is a paradise for birdwatchers, home to Albertine Rift endemics, while nature walks reveal forests, crater lakes, and bamboo groves ideal for photographers. Cultural encounters with the Batwa community provide rich insights into traditional forest life, music, and conservation-linked heritage.
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park hosts about 33 mountain gorillas in one habituated family, endangered golden monkeys, and other wildlife like colobus monkeys, duikers, and bushbucks. With 180+ bird species, volcanic peaks, crater lakes, and Batwa cultural encounters, it offers a rich blend of wildlife, scenery, and heritage.
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is a year-round destination, but the dry season (June–September & December–February) is best for gorilla trekking, golden monkey tracking, and volcano hiking, with easier trails and clearer wildlife sightings. The wet season (March–May & October–November) offers lush landscapes, vibrant birdlife, and great photography, though trails can be muddy and quieter.
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is reachable by road, about 520 km (8–9 hours) from Kampala, or via Bwindi for combined gorilla trekking. By air, domestic flights from Entebbe or Kajjansi land at Kihihi Airstrip, 30 minutes away. Its location within the Virunga Conservation Area also allows cross-border safaris with Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park.
Uganda, the “Pearl of Africa,” captivates with its stunning natural beauty, from lush rainforests to vast savannahs. Experience up-close encounters with mountain gorillas, thrilling safaris, and the adventure-filled waters of the River Nile.
Accommodation around Mgahinga is limited but excellent, ranging from luxury lodges like Virunga Lodge and Mount Gahinga Lodge with stunning volcano views, to mid-range stays such as Buhoma Lodge and Mgahinga Gorilla Camp. Budget guesthouses and eco-lodges offer authentic experiences. Most provide guided services for trekking, monkey tracking, and hiking.
Currently, trekkers can visit one habituated gorilla family. Advanced booking is required due to limited permits.
Gorilla trekking permits in Mgahinga cost about USD 600 per person for non-residents, with lower rates for East African citizens and Ugandans.
