Tarangire National Park

About Tarangire

Tarangire National Park is best for you if you want elephants, baobab trees, fewer crowds than Serengeti, and strong dry-season wildlife viewing.

The Tarangire River is the key. During the dry season, wildlife gathers around the river because it remains an important water source.

You should not skip Tarangire just because Serengeti is more famous. From June to October, Tarangire can be one of the strongest parks on a Tanzania safari itinerary.

What Activities To Do

You can take full-day or half-day game drives, birding trips, guided walking safaris in approved areas, night game drives where permitted, and cultural visits near the park.

Tarangire is also strong for photography because the elephants, baobabs, riverbeds, and open woodland give the park a clear look.

What To See

Tarangire National Park is famed for its massive elephant herds, alongside lions, leopards, and hyenas. During the dry season, wildebeest, zebras, giraffes, and antelopes gather in abundance. With over 550 bird species, including endemic lovebirds and Ashy starlings, it’s a true wildlife haven.

Best Time To Visit

June to October is the main wildlife season because animals gather near water. November to May brings green scenery, migratory birds, and fewer crowds, but wildlife may be more spread out.

How To Get There?

Tarangire National Park is easily accessible from Arusha, about a two-hour drive along well-maintained roads. Many travelers visit as part of the northern safari circuit, often combined with Lake Manyara or Ngorongoro. Charter flights to nearby airstrips also provide quick access to the park.
