After breakfast in Kampala or Entebbe, set off on a scenic drive to Kibale Forest National Park, the renowned primate capital of East Africa. The park is home to 13 primate species, most notably the chimpanzees, and hosts over 350 bird species.
Arrive in Fort Portal for lunch before continuing to Kibale. In the afternoon, head to the park headquarters for a chimpanzee tracking experience. As you trek through the tropical forest, you may also spot red colobus, bush babies, and forest birds like the African pitta.
Overnight: Ndali Lodge / Mountains of the Moon Hotel / Primate Lodge
Start your morning with a guided walk through Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, a community-run conservation area teeming with birdlife. Expect sightings of the Great Blue Turaco, Black-and-white Shrike Flycatcher, and White-spotted Flufftail. The swamp boasts over 200 bird species and is a hotspot for both birders and primate lovers.
In the afternoon, transfer to Semuliki National Park, arriving in time to relax at your lodge. After dinner, set out on a spot-lit night game drive, searching for nocturnal species like nightjars, mongoose, leopards, and perhaps even lions.
Overnight: Semuliki Safari Lodge / Primate Lodge
Wake early for a chimpanzee habituation experience in Semuliki’s rainforest. This allows more time than a typical trek, giving you the chance to observe the chimps' behavior from their morning wake-up through to nesting. Other primates and birds like the Black Bee-eater or White-crested Hornbill may also appear along the trail.
Return for lunch and rest before heading out again for an evening game drive, scanning for game and bird species active at dusk.
Overnight: Semuliki Safari Lodge / Primate Lodge
After breakfast and a short game drive, set off for Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda’s most biodiverse wildlife reserve and home to over 600 bird species—one of the highest concentrations in the world.
Enjoy views of the Rwenzori Mountains and crater lakes en route. Arrive in the evening for check-in and dinner.
Overnight: Mweya Safari Lodge / Parkview Safari Lodge / Institute of Ecology
Wake up early for a sunrise game drive through the Kasenyi Plains and Queen’s Mile, where you'll spot large mammals like lions, buffaloes, Uganda kobs, and elephants, alongside species like Palm-nut Vulture, Black-bellied Bustard, and Temminck’s Courser.
In the afternoon, take a relaxing boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel, a haven for waterbirds including the African Fish Eagle, Great White Pelican, African Skimmer, and hundreds of Pied Kingfishers. Hippos, crocodiles, and buffaloes are also commonly seen at the water’s edge.
Overnight: Mweya Safari Lodge / Parkview Safari Lodge
After breakfast, journey through the Kigezi Highlands to Lake Bunyonyi, one of East Africa’s most scenic lakes. Nicknamed “The Place of Many Little Birds,” the lake area is excellent for birding, photography, and peaceful relaxation.
Arrive in the afternoon and take a walking tour around the crater lakes or hike to viewpoints for panoramic vistas. Spot bronze sunbirds, black-headed weavers, and other highland species.
Overnight: Arcadia Cottages / BirdNest Resort / Bushara Island Camp
After breakfast, depart for Lake Mburo National Park, Uganda’s smallest savannah park. Arrive in the late afternoon and enjoy a canoe ride on the lake, offering unique views of aquatic birdlife such as the African Finfoot, White-backed Night Heron, and Papyrus Gonolek.
Lake Mburo is also home to zebras, eland, impalas, and hippos.
Overnight: AMantana Tented Camp / Rwakobo Rock / Rwonyo Rest Camp
